چکیده

Purpose. To compare the compressive strength of cannulated versus non-cannulated cancellous screws for undisplaced femoral neck fractures in synthetic bones. Methods. 18 synthetic proximal femurs simulating an AO B1 valgus impacted femoral neck fracture in osteoporotic bone were used. The fracture angles were between 55o and 63o (Pauwels grade 2). Fixation was made using 6.5-mm non-cannulated screws (n=6), 6.5-mm cannulated screws (n=6), or 7.3-mm cannulated screws (n=6). A custom-built jig was designed to guide the insertion of the screws in an identical triangular configuration. Screws were tightened by a single operator using a torquemeasuring screwdriver. The femoral head was subjected to progressive axial loading at 5 mm/min. The load to failure and displacement were recorded. Results. The 3 groups did not differ significantly except that the load to failure was higher in the construct with 6.5-mm non-cannulated screws than Cannulated versus non-cannulated cancellous screw fixation for femoral neck fractures: a synthetic bone biomechanical study AW Gardner,1 MZ Toh,2 KSA Yew,3 DTT Lie,3 SM Chou2 1 Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Jurong Health Services, Alexandra Hospital, Singapore 2 School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore 3 Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Singapore General Hospital, Singapore Address correspondence and reprint requests to: AW Gardner, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Jurong Health Services, Alexandra Hospital, Singapore. The compressive strength of a synthetic bone hip fracture model fixed with non-cannulated screws was higher than that of cannulated screws of the same diameter.

Subtrochanteric fracture: a rare but severe complication after screw fixation of femoral neck fractures in the elderly.

Cannulated screw fixation is a minimal invasive technique to treat undisplaced femoral neck fractures. It is the preferred method in elderly patients who often suffer co-morbidities. There is scarce literature on subtrochanteric femoral fracture as a complication of cannulated screw fixation of a femoral neck fracture. This complication occurred, without an adequate trauma, in two of 35 patient...

Cannulated Screw Fixation For Femoral Neck Fractures : A 5-year Experience In A Single Institution

ABSTRACT Cannulated screw fixation is a widely accepted surgical method for management of fractures of the neck of femur especially in patients with poor premorbid conditions, minimally displaced fractures and those from a younger age group. A five year retrospective study was carried out in 53 consecutive patients between 2006 to 2010 to determine the pattern of injuries, management, outcomes ...

Biomechanical comparison of dynamic hip screw, proximal femoral nail, cannulated screw, and monoaxial external fixation in the treatment of basicervical femoral neck fractures.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The objective of this study was to establish relative fixation strengths of proximal femoral nail (PFN), dynamic hip screw (DHS), monolateral external fixator (EF), and cannulated screw (CS) in basicervical hip fracture model. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study involved four groups of implanted composite proximal femoral synthetic bones of eight specimens per group; nailing wit...
